A private, not-for-profit organization supported by the Sunrise group, whose mission is to provide people with disabilities the assistance and support necessary to enable them to live valued lives in the community. Many of the opportunities people with developmental disabilities experience today are the direct results of Sunrise founding leaders as well as the individuals and families originally served by Sunrise in South Florida. In fact, a majority of Sunrise's current leadership team were each actively involved in influencing public policy and spearheading legal challenges that dramatically improved the lifestyles of individuals with intellectual and other disabilities.
In 1996, Sunrise Community of Polk County, Inc., was formed to provide services and supports to adults and children who had formally been served by Wheelhouse of Lakeland, Florida. Subsequently, in 1998, operations previously run by Community Environments, Inc., were transferred to Sunrise Community of Polk County, Inc., adding small residences in the communities of Sebring and Wauchula. The This organization continues to grow and now provides services in several local counties and has administrative offices and the Wheely Amazing Art Day Program in Lakeland, Florida.
